What is adrenal fatigue?
Adrenal Fatigue is referred to as "the twenty-first century stress syndrome." by renowned author, Dr. James Wilson. Modern humans deal with unprecedented levels of stress, far beyond what our ancestors ever experienced. Stress can come in many forms. There is mental/emotional stress, dietary stress, and that caused by pain or inflammation. Most people experience a near continuous influx of stress in their lives and in their bodies. This takes its toll on the body, leading to a condition called, Adrenal Fatigue.
Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Include:
Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Include:
- Chronic sense of fatigue
- Unexplained headaches
- Digestive problems
- Feeling tired in the morning even after a “good” night's sleep
- Loss of libido
- Weight gain
- Feelings of exhaustion and overwhelm
- Inability to cope with stressors
- Insomnia or deranged sleep patterns
- Feeling rundown
- Low stamina, poor to recover from exercise
- Difficulty concentrating or frequent “brain fog”
- PMS and menopausal symptoms
- Unexplained anxiety or depression
Our adrenal glands are in charge of the body's stress response. They are designed to mobilize the body for dealing with an emergency or crisis. This is often called the "fight or flight response." Imagine you are a primitive human, walking through the jungle. Suddenly a tiger jumps out at you. You can either run away from that tiger (the "flight" response) or grapple with it (the "fight" response). Either way, your body mobilizes for fast action. Stress hormones release and blood pressure rises, muscles engage, eye site becomes more acute, and heart rate increases. All of these reactions are designed to improve your odds of survival in the emergency. The human body evolved to be able to deal with these kinds of short bursts of extreme stress. When you effectively escape from the tiger, and the stressor is over, the brain recognizes this and is then able to turn off production of stress hormones and move into repair and recovery.
However, when stress becomes chronic, repair and recovery are hindered. The brain loses its ability to turn off the production of the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is catabolic, meaning it causes break down processes in the body. When cortisol is dis-regulated due to chronic stress, various body systems become disrupted. Some of the health issues associated with Adrenal Fatigue include:
